Hayley Kiyoko Delivers Another Sapphic Miracle With the ‘Girls Like Girls’ Trailer
At this point, we don’t even question it anymore. Hayley Kiyoko releases something new, and we show up like devoted members of her congregation. Ever since she burst onto the scene and reshaped sapphic pop culture as we know it, we’ve been following closely—hands clasped, hearts open, playlists queued. So yes, when the internet lovingly dubbed her “lesbian Jesus,” we accepted it as canon. And today, she’s performed yet another miracle by officially unveiling the trailer, poster, and release date for Girls Like Girls, her upcoming feature film. And we are being so normal about it. Extremely normal. We are calm. We are composed. We are absolutely not spiraling with excitement. (Okay, we are.)
Written and directed by Hayley Kiyoko herself, Girls Like Girls marks her directorial debut, and honestly? What a way to enter the chat. The film is based on her young adult novel Girls Like Girls, which itself was inspired by her iconic 2015 song and music video that became a defining moment for a generation of queer girls who finally felt seen. The film will be released by Focus Features and is set to hit theaters nationwide on June 19, with international release dates still to be announced. Releasing a sapphic coming-of-age film right in the middle of Pride Month? That feels personal, and we love it.

The official synopsis describes Girls Like Girls as a heartfelt coming-of-age story set over one sun-drenched summer, following new-girl-in-town Coley (Maya Da Costa) as she falls in love for the first time while learning to accept herself along the way. And while we won’t spoil the journey, longtime fans know this story goes deeper than a simple summer romance. This is a story rooted in grief, emotional vulnerability, and the slow, often painful process of letting someone in after loss.
Coley arrives in a small Oregon town after the death of her mother, emotionally guarded and unsure how to let herself care again. Her world begins to shift when she meets Sonya (Myra Molloy), a confident and popular girl who immediately captures her attention. Their connection grows into something undeniably romantic, but also complicated, messy, and painfully real. Fear, expectation, and emotional risk all collide, making this a story that resonates deeply with queer audiences who know how high the stakes can feel when loving honestly for the first time, especially when paired with identity and loss.
The newly released trailer gives us our first real look at this journey, introducing Coley and Sonya and teasing the emotional highs and lows that define their connection as they try to find their way to each other.
Girls Like Girls also stars Levon Hawke and Zach Braff, with a screenplay written by Hayley Kiyoko and Stefanie Scott. The film is produced by Marc Platt, Adam Siegel, Michael Philip, Jason Moring, Richard Alan Reid, Katie McNicol, and Dee Best, bringing significant industry support to a deeply personal sapphic story.
We cannot wait to see Girls Like Girls on the big screen on June 19. Sapphic stories remain vastly underrepresented compared to their male-male counterparts, and every project like this feels both joyful and necessary. We’ll be seated, cheering loudly, supporting proudly, and making sure this film gets the love, attention, recognition, and spotlight it deserves. Because sapphic love stories matter, and Hayley Kiyoko continues to prove she understands that better than anyone.
