Glass Onion: Benoit Blanc gets a live-in lover

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery was released in theaters on November 23, 2022. This was Netflix’s widest-ever theatrical release and the film grossed $15 million at the box office. The streaming giant then released it on Netflix on December 23. Prior to its release, director Rian Johnson told the media that folks would see Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig), the lead detective in the franchise, get a boyfriend in this installment. A gay whodunnit type of movie? Sign us up!

We’re not going to review the whole film, as we feel that would really give away the twists and turns which make the story so great. However, the gist of it all is this: a rich eccentric dude called Miles (Edward Norton) invites all his friends to his private island for a murder mystery weekend where Miles is the murder victim and they all have to figure out who killed him. Except that it goes a little wrong, in that someone actually does die, and then it becomes an actual quest to figure out who is the murderer.

Benoit Blanc isn’t part of the gang though and was invited on the sly, which is fortunate for everyone because he is excellent at solving crime. During the promotion of the film, it was unveiled that Benoit Blanc’s character would be written into Glass Onion as gay. Daniel Craig playing a gay character? Yes, please.

Those that showed up for the gay stuff had to wait quite a while for any rainbow shenanigans to surface. It’s in the second half of the film that it is revealed that Blanc has a male live-in spouse. The status of their relationship is unknown: are they married, are they boyfriends? No one really knows. However, it does appear that they live together so it can be assumed that it’s a serious, permanent kind of situation, whatever it may be.

Huge superstars like Daniel Craig and Hugh Grant in an epically huge Netflix movie portraying an out-gay couple sounds almost too good to be true. And unfortunately, it kind of is too good to be true.

While it is confirmed that Benoit Blanc is gay, and we do get to see Hugh Grant on screen (for about five seconds) to confirm the living situation, that’s the entirety of the storyline. Daniel Craig and Hugh Grant don’t even share a screen together. There are exactly zero scenes with them interacting, and zero scenes where they act together. At this point, one saying that the two are just roommates couldn’t be accused of crazy talk. If this is Netflix’s idea of ‘representation’ then we have bigger problems than we realized.

Blanc’s relationship, nor his sexuality is never discussed in the film before, nor after this short moment. So if you’re showing up to Glass Onion thinking you’re in for a gayfest treat, think again.

Fortunately, the film itself is really great, and it’s excellent on its own without all the gay stuff. However, such a huge deal was made during the promotional rounds about the fact that Benoit Blanc was getting a gay lover in this installment. Perhaps we got ahead of ourselves and expected too much.

Despite the gay disappointment, Glass Onion is still a serve. Janelle Monae puts on a show-stopping performance, as does everyone in the cast. Kate Hudson, Kathryn Hahn, Dave Bautista, and Leslie Odom Jr. all have such great chemistry and they’re all so funny! It’s incredibly well-written and the entire thing was a delightful experience.

Give it a watch and let us know your thoughts.
