First Look at The Old Guard 2: Charlize Theron Is Back, and the Stakes Are Higher Than Ever
Finally! After years of waiting (and yes, we counted every minute), we have our official first look at The Old Guard 2! And honestly, our excitement is through the roof. The sequel to the Charlize Theron-led 2020 hit is officially dropping on July 2, and Netflix is giving us a sneak peek that’s more than enough to get us hyped all over again.
We’ve had The Old Guard sequel on our wish list ever since the credits rolled on the first one, and now it’s actually happening. As soon as Netflix confirmed the release as part of their 2025 lineup, we marked our calendars, messaged the group chat, and started planning our movie night. And today, thanks to some glorious production stills and new plot details, we’re diving back into the world of immortal warriors, queer love, and high-stakes action.
Directed by Victoria Mahoney, with a screenplay by Greg Rucka (who wrote the original graphic novel) and Sarah L. Walker, The Old Guard 2 picks up right where we left off. Charlize Theron returns as Andromache the Scythian — aka Andy — still leading her badass team of immortals through dangerous new territory. Only now, there’s a twist: Andy’s no longer immortal. And that changes everything.
Here’s what we know so far: According to the official synopsis, Andy and her team — including Nile (KiKi Layne), Joe (Marwan Kenzari), Nicky (Luca Marinelli), and James Copley (Chiwetel Ejiofor) — are grappling with a powerful new threat. Booker (Matthias Schoenaerts) remains in exile after his betrayal, and Quynh (Veronica Ngô), freshly freed from her underwater prison, is out for revenge. With Andy’s mortality now in play, the group enlists the help of Tuah(Henry Golding), an old friend who might just hold the key to unraveling the mystery of immortality itself.
For those of us who loved the queer representation in the first film, we’re happy to report that Joe and Nicky — our favorite immortal power couple — are still very much part of the story. Their relationship was a major highlight of the first movie, and we’re hoping this next chapter gives them even more space to shine.
Charlize Theron teased what’s to come in an interview with TUDUM, saying: “There’s something for everyone in this movie: Fans who loved the first film, fans who love the original graphic novels — and brand-new fans who are looking for insane action, grounded and relatable characters, gorgeous locations, and a global cast of superstars.” And yes, that includes Uma Thurman and Henry Golding, who are joining the cast as key new players. We’re already obsessed.
As Theron put it: “Andy and her warriors are back with a renewed sense of purpose. The stakes are even higher now that Andy is mortal and can die — but that certainly won’t keep her out of the action.”
We don’t know about y’all, but we’re counting the days. We loved the first film for its mix of epic battles, emotionally rich characters, and unapologetically queer storytelling. And from everything we’ve seen so far, The Old Guard 2 is doubling down on everything that made us fall in love in the first place.
July can’t come soon enough. In the meantime, we’ll be rewatching the original film on repeat and maybe even dusting off the graphic novels while we wait.
