Warrior Nun 2×02 – ‘Colossians 3: 9-10’ reaction review
Warrior Nun 2×02 picks up right where 2×01 left us. Lilith (Lorena Andrea) is standing in a dungeon surrounded by bloodied bodies that she slaughtered. She is emanating the fury of a thousand fiery suns, and Vincent (Tristan Ulloa) is nowhere to be found.
Meanwhile, Beatrice (Kristina Tonteri-Young) and Ava (Alba Baptista) are still with Miguel (Jack Mullarkey) as they stake out whatever it is that the Firstborn Children are up to. Beatrice is still convinced that Miguel can’t be trusted (same, bestie) but Ava isn’t having it. Ava calls it like she sees it and tells Beatrice that she thinks Beatrice is just jealous.
Ava implies that Beatrice doesn’t like sharing Ava with others, and while it’s not super clear if Ava is fishing for info or just generally making an observation, we know better. Beatrice liiiikkkkeessssss Ava, and the look that washes over her face at this moment should tell Ava everything she needs to know about that.
If you’ve ever wondered what gay panic looks like, it’s Beatrice’s face in this scene.
But tensions are rising (and not the sexual kind) inWarrior Nun 2×02 as Ava and Beatrice begin to realize what they’re up against. Adriel (William Miller) is mobilizing and seems to be making preparations to enact some unspeakable evil into the earthly realm, but Beatrice doesn’t think Ava is ready to face off with the ‘angel’ just yet.
While there isn’t a lot of lesbianing in this episode, there is a lot of pining. By now it’s positively clear to anyone with eyes that Beatrice has a massive lady boner for Ava but she has absolutely no idea what to do with it. Advice in the form of a pretty stranger walks into Beatrice’s life and she is encouraged to, in so many words, keep her options open if Ava isn’t picking up what Beatrice is putting down.
It’s more than that though – Beatrice has a mission to prepare Ava for what is coming, and it’s this that is ultimately stopping Beatrice from moving in on Ava in romantic terms. Crossing the lines between them blurs her responsibilities and her role, and that just seems wildly out of character for someone like Beatrice.
But there is also the bag of mixed signals that Ava is clearly sending Beatrice’s way. It’s no surprise that Beatrice isn’t doing anything about her feelings because Ava’s are murky and unclear.
Meanwhile, against Beatrice’s better judgment, she and Ava are pulled into another mess with Miguel. In Warrior Nun 2×02, the girls have access to a captured member of the Firstborn Children who is being held for interrogation. This doesn’t really go as planned though and the prisoner seems to know who Ava is. Mid-interrogation he is about to out her identity as the halo-bearer but Beatrice does her thing and shuts the man up quickly smart.
Except that she doesn’t, and a massive fight ensues. Ava faces off against the prisoner (who definitely has a demon running through his soul) and the halo takes over. In an effort to protect Beatrice from becoming possessed, Ava exposes her power to those in the room and just like that, they’re in trouble again.
In other places during Warrior Nun 2×02, Yasmine (Meena Rayann), another badass woman from a completely different congregation of nuns, gets in touch with the order to let them know that she knows how to stop Adriel (William Miller). She tells Mother Superion (Sylvia De Fanti) that the information can only be passed on to the halo bearer herself though, so now they’re on a mission to find Ava and Beatrice too.
Adjacently, Lilith is confronting some demons of her own – her mother. Lilith has clearly been infected by some kind of demonic power that she doesn’t really understand the full scope of yet. While it is clear that she was supposed to be the warrior nun, in the absence of that now, she seems to be confused about what is happening to her.
And frankly? Us too. We’re trying to work out her place in all this. She is obviously being positioned to become the villain of the story, so does this mean she will pair up with Adriel on his mission? Or will she take his place and become the thing that Ava must face when their confrontation finally comes to fruition? Inquiring minds want to know…
However, Avatrice is the very definition of a slow-burn. It’s obvious where this is headed, but we’re very curious to see how it all unfolds. Unlike stories with two males at the center, sapphic romances tend not to receive the same level of audience support. Because of this, in stories that feature a romantic relationship between two boys, the relationship can serve as the driving narrative force in the production. However, stories about two women in love need so much more than just the tensions of the relationship in order to survive. And Warrior Nun seems to have figured out that formula.
The love story that is developing is not at the center of this show. It is sidelined in favor of the religious lore, and the drama unfolding between Ava and Adriel. Warrior Nun 2×02 moves the relationship along in all the right ways, but it’s slow – epically slow. Unfortunately, sapphic content must give viewers something else to invest in other than the relationship if the story is to see the light of day, and Warrior Nun is doing just that.
It’s a sad state of affairs that in order to even see sapphic representation on screens, these are the lengths that creators must go to, but here we are. Apparently too much lesbianing isn’t palatable for the masses *insert eye roll here* but this show seems to have figured out just how much is enough.
But we see you Avatrice and we can feel the chemistry building. We’re strapping ourselves in for this ride because something tells us that she is going to be well worth the wait.
