Uncoupled: Chatting with Darren Star and Jeffrey Richman

During the Uncoupled press junket last week, Q+ Magazine was fortunate enough to spend a few moments chatting with Hollywood A-listers executive producers Darren Star and Jeffrey Richman. Both gentlemen are the masterminds behind Neil Patrick Harris’ new queer Netflix show, Uncoupled, and let us tell you, what a force they are!

Jeffrey Richman has a long list of incredibly successful productions under his belt. He served as the executive producer on Modern Family for nine years where he won six Emmys, three Writers Guild Awards, three Producers Guild Awards, and a Golden Glove for Best Comedy.

He has also executive produced, or co-executive produced other titles such as Frasier, Desperate Housewives, Rules of Engagement, Wings, and Charlie Lawrence

Likewise Darren Star has enjoyed an equally prolific Hollywood career. Before Uncoupled, Darren Star was the mastermind behind the ever-popular Sex and the City. He is also the creator of Beverly Hills, 90210, Melrose Place, Younger, and most recently Netflix’s Emily in Paris.

Despite the fact that the show is centered around queer characters, Darren Star and Jeffrey Richman told Q+ Magazine that Uncoupled wasn’t necessarily made with a queer agenda in mind. The show is more about the universality of love and heartbreak than it is the queer agenda or queer experience. It’s about how it doesn’t matter if you’re gay or straight, the trials and tribulations associated with love and heartbreak are universal to all. Queer people fall in love and feel pain during breakups in much the same way that straight people do. Darren Star and Jeffrey Richman hope that Uncoupled conveys this message to viewers.

Check out what else they had to say about the issue, as well as what it was like working with Neil Patrick Harris and the rest of the cast in the video below.
