Tina Romero Brings Queer Zombie Comedy Queens of the Dead to Theaters This October

Presented by IFC Films and Shudder, and directed by Tina Romero, Queens of the Dead is a queer zombie comedy you won’t want to miss when it shimmies into theaters on Friday, October 24th, just in time to kick off spooky season in the gayest way possible.

There’s always been something delicious about the connection between queerness and horror. From campy villains to subversive final girls, horror has long been a playground for queer expression. Tina Romero, daughter of legendary filmmaker George A. Romero, is carrying that tradition into bold new territory, giving us a bloody, glitter-drenched, unapologetically queer spin on the zombie genre. And honestly? We couldn’t be more excited.

The official synopsis sets the stage for a chaotic, fabulous apocalypse: a zombie outbreak hits Brooklyn on the night of a massive warehouse party, forcing an eclectic group of drag queens, club kids, and frenemies to drop their drama and use their unique skills to battle an army of scrolling, brain-thirsty undead. If that doesn’t sound like a campy queer fever dream come true, we don’t know what does.

Written by Tina Romero and Erin Judge, the film boasts a cast that’s as exciting as the premise itself. Queens of the Deadstars Katy O’Brian, Jaquel Spivey, Tomas Matos, Nina West, Quincy Dunn-Baker, Jack Haven, Cheyenne Jackson, Dominique Jackson, Margaret Cho, Riki Lindhome, Eve Lindley, Becca Blackwell, Shaunette Renée Wilson, and Julie J. With a lineup this stacked, we’re already imagining the iconic one-liners, shade-filled banter, and over-the-top zombie takedowns that will have us screaming in theaters (and maybe out loud at the screen).

You can catch the first stills from the film in the gallery below, which give us a taste of the outrageous, campy horror that Tina Romero has cooked up. Sequins, fake blood, and drag looks sharper than a machete? Count us in.

With Romero’s legacy in horror and her own fierce queer vision driving this project, Queens of the Dead promises to be a wickedly fun ride. We’re more than ready to sashay into theaters this October and watch drag queens and club kids slay in more ways than one.
