The Switch: The World’s First Transgender Sitcom Is Now Free for Everyone

We’ve got some seriously good news for sitcom lovers and for anyone who believes in the power of queer joy on screen. The Switch, which made history in 2016 as the world’s first transgender sitcom when it premiered in Canada, has finally been released worldwide!

Almost a decade after its original debut, this groundbreaking series is making a comeback like no other: it’s been released under a Creative Commons license, meaning it’s free forever for everyone, everywhere. Yep, you read that right. Whether you download it, stream it on YouTube, Vimeo, or Tubi, or even pirate it, The Switch is officially accessible to all. And honestly? That’s a huge step for representation.

It also couldn’t come at a more urgent time. Around the world, trans people are facing escalating hostility, with discriminatory laws being passed to try and erase their existence. In response, Canadian independent production company Trembling Void Studios is doing what no major media company has ever dared: permanently giving away its flagship series so that trans stories can be seen, shared, and celebrated without restrictions. Their mission is simple yet radical: give the world unrestricted access to positive, uplifting trans representation.

When The Switch first premiered on OUTtv back in 2016, it broke barriers as the first television series with a transgender cast in leading roles. The sitcom follows Sü (played by pro-wrestler Nyla Rose), who, after coming out as trans, suddenly finds herself unemployed, homeless, and crashing at her ex’s place—an ex who just so happens to be an endearingly awkward eco-terrorist. Over the course of its first season, we follow Sü through questionable boyfriends, precarious jobs, and even corporate murders, all while she searches for love and community.

“Between trans rights, culture wars, and CEO assassinations, The Switch was ahead of its time, a cultural pushback against Trump’s first presidency. With the rise of alt-right politics, this provocatively left-leaning show is more relevant than ever and needs to be seen worldwide,” says producer Ingo Lou of Trembling Void Studios. “Giving trans people access to positive, uplifting representation is important, and we hope these stories bring joy, passion, and inspiration to every viewer.”

For Nyla Rose, the series holds deeply personal significance: “The Switch was my first leading role outside of the ring. It tells trans stories that aren’t focused on trauma, but on joy, humour, and resilience. Finally, our show is getting a much-deserved mass release. It’s been hidden for too long, and trans people shouldn’t be hidden—we’re here and we always have been.”

The decision to release The Switch through Creative Commons not only challenges the traditional television industry, it also ensures that the series will always be available—without paywalls or subscriptions—and protected from being bought up and shelved by larger media companies. As showrunner and co-star Amy Fox puts it: “The power of diverse stories and of seeing yourself on screen is more impactful than greed. We’re tired of people not having heard about this radical and beautiful show, which is an act of resistance. We’re asking the world to watch it and share it with anyone who needs to see it. Go pirate the future.”

Episodes are being released weekly, and the first three are already available to stream in the playlist below. So grab some popcorn, hit play, and share it far and wide, because queer stories like this deserve to be seen everywhere.
