The extinction of straight people: Inevitable, according to Marjorie Taylor Greene
Republicans are at it again. Over the weekend during a Facebook live Republican congresswoman from Georgia, Marjorie Taylor Greene, said she thinks within four or five generations straight people will be extinct. Known for her homophoboc and anti-trans rhetoric, the words from this woman should not surprise anyone, yet here we are – again.
During the live, the congresswoman said, “They just want you to think that all of a sudden the entire population is steadily turning gay or turning trans.
“Probably in about four or five generations – no one will be straight anymore. Everyone will be either gay or trans or non-conforming. Whatever the list of 50 or 60 different options there are.”
However, it was clear Marjorie Taylor Greene’s statements were not rooted in anything other than homophobia and she was using the statement to continue to attack trans people in Texas over the Uvalde school shooting. We have refused to report on these senseless attacks because we don’t want to contribute to the immortalization of these trans people’s names being linked to this tragedy, and we will continue to remain true to this today.
Greene and some of her right-wing coworkers tried pretty hard to convince people that the shooter of the Uvalde massacre was a specific trans person from Texas because the offender wore eyeliner, and had alleged mental issues. Despite the police taking down the shooter at the scene, right-wing spokespeople continued to label a different person from Texas – a trans person – as the one responsible for the shooting. Not even when said person went online and proved it wasn’t them, did they stop.
To date, three trans people have been mis-identified as the shooter, despite confirming their identities and them being still very much alive. This is nothing more than a targeted witch hunt by right-wing conservatives to further impede the trans movement from progressing further.
In this weekend’s Facebook live, Marjorie Taylor Greene did not come armed with any statistics or facts about her prophesying the extinction of straight people. In fact, the moment the words left her mouth, fact checkers were hard on her case, doing what they could to discredit the wildly inaccurate statement.
While the proliferation of information does mean that as a society, folks are talking about gender and sexuality in more fluid terms than ever before, statistics reveal that at least in the United States, well over ninety percent of people still identify as heterosexual.
So while it sounds like a delightful world to live in indeed (more gay, please), Marjorie Taylor Green’s statement that straight people will soon be extinct, is sadly nothing more than laughable homophobia at best.
On the evening of Pride 2022, we can aptly say with rolled eyes: Marjorie Taylor Greene, sit down and shut up.
