The Boyfriend Season 2 Trailer Drops as Netflix Reveals the New Cast

Last week, Netflix unveiled the cast of The Boyfriend Season 2 along with its highly anticipated trailer—and yes, we’re already counting down the days. With its first season and now its second, The Boyfriend holds the distinction of being Japan’s first gay romance reality series, and its return feels less like a simple follow-up and more like the next chapter in a story that has genuinely meant something to queer viewers around the world.

The new season premieres on Netflix on January 12, so save the date. Season 2 builds on the warmth, vulnerability, and emotional honesty that made the first season resonate so deeply, while expanding its scope in exciting new ways. This time around, the series trades sunny vibes for snow-dusted intimacy, relocating to Hokkaido, where the iconic Green Room becomes a cozy winter retreat. Over the course of two months, ten men live together, run their peppermint-colored coffee truck, and share the kind of everyday moments that slowly turn into something more… friendships, crushes, heartbreaks, and maybe even love.

The newly released trailer gives us our first glimpse of what’s ahead: the men settling into life together in Hokkaido, tentative first connections forming, late-night conversations in the familiar living room, and moments of vulnerability that end in shared tears. There’s also a tease of a shocking reunion and a romance that seems to bloom faster than expected. We even get to see the studio hosts reacting in real time, pulling us right into the emotional rollercoaster and inviting us to speculate about which moments will end up defining the season. If you haven’t watched it yet, trust us, you’ll want to. Check out the trailer below.

Beyond the trailer, we’re also getting to know the men who will be sharing this winter together. So far, eight participants have been revealed, and this year’s cast is refreshingly diverse, ranging in age from 20 to 40 and including men from outside Japan, with participants from Thailand and Peru joining the mix.

Bomi (23) is a university student from Tokyo Prefecture. He describes himself as an ordinary college student who’s still searching for his first boyfriend. His ideal romance is pure and innocent, and there’s something especially tender about watching someone step into love for the very first time in a space as emotionally open as The Boyfriend.

Hiroya (29) comes from Hokkaido Prefecture and works as an art director. He’s known for being highly considerate, often putting others first, sometimes at the expense of his own romantic life. Having avoided relationships in the past, he’s entering the house with a clear intention: to finally change that pattern.

Huwei (26) is a graduate student from Thailand, and instantly stands out as both lovable and impressive. He speaks multiple languages, balances brains with athleticism, and brings an international energy that adds another layer to the show’s exploration of queer connection beyond borders.

Izaya (32) works in IT sales and is based in Tokyo Prefecture. He’s sincere, a bit strict, and deeply serious about love. He’s looking for a partner who thinks carefully about the future, making him one of the more grounded presences in the house.

Jobu (26) is a marketer at a manufacturing company from Osaka Prefecture. He’s expressive, enthusiastic about love, and the kind of person who can instantly liven up a room. His openness and emotional energy feel tailor-made for a show that thrives on honest connection.

Kazuyuki (40), also from Osaka Prefecture, works in telecom sales and brings a very different life experience to the group. Fresh out of a 15-year relationship, he naturally slips into the role of the kind older brother, offering warmth, wisdom, and quiet support to the others while figuring out what love looks like for him now.

Ryuki (20) is a university student from Osaka Prefecture and the youngest of the group so far. He comes across as a gentle, younger-brother type who’s trying to leave a painful past behind and move forward into his next relationship with hope and courage.

William (34) is an IT company project manager from Peru. Popular and charismatic, he dreams of getting married someday. After being hurt in a previous relationship, he’s struggling to take that next step, making his journey one that’s likely to resonate with anyone who’s ever loved deeply and hesitated to do it again.

Season 2 also brings back music from Korean indie rock band Glen Check, who return after composing the Season 1 track Dazed & Confused. Their new song, Bloom, underscores the emotional journeys of the participants as they move through a transformative winter toward a brighter, more hopeful spring.

An unforgettable winter is about to begin, and if the trailer is any indication, The Boyfriend Season 2 is shaping up to be just as tender, messy, and deeply queer as we hoped. January 12 can’t come soon enough.
