Rob Jetten Projected to Become the Netherlands’ Youngest and First Openly Gay Prime Minister

The Netherlands just made history, or is 99% about to do it. Following Wednesday’s national election on October 29, 38-year-old Rob Jetten is projected to become the country’s youngest and first openly gay prime minister. The centrist-liberal D66 party leader defeated far-right opponent Geert Wilders, who ran on a campaign marked by anti-immigration and Islamophobic rhetoric. The result marks a major cultural and political shift for the Netherlands, one that feels deeply symbolic in a global moment where inclusive leadership is more vital than ever.

“I am incredibly happy that we have become the biggest party in this election,” Jetten told reporters after the results came in, calling it a “historic result” for his party. He didn’t shy away from acknowledging the magnitude of the moment either, adding, “I feel a great responsibility.” Beyond celebrating the victory, Jetten highlighted the broader significance of his win: “We’ve shown the rest of Europe and the world that it’s possible to beat populist movements with a positive message for your country.”

While Jetten’s victory won’t be officially confirmed until November 3, when overseas mail-in ballots are counted, there’s little doubt he’s poised to step into the role. For many Dutch citizens—and especially for queer people around the world—his projected win feels like a breath of fresh air. It’s not just about representation in politics; it’s about what that representation stands for: hope, progress, and visibility.

Jetten’s story also comes with a beautiful love story that’s captured hearts across social media. His fiancé, two-time Olympian Nico Keenan, celebrated the night’s results by sharing a heartwarming TikTok of the couple getting ready together. Set to RAYE’s “Where the Hell Is My Husband?”, the clip shows both men dressed in sleek suits, smiling, holding each other by the waist, and sharing a quick kiss before heading out. It’s an image that feels both deeply personal and quietly revolutionary: a same-sex couple proudly embracing as one of them prepares to lead a nation.

Keenan, who is bisexual, has also made his own mark in sports. The Argentine athlete has played field hockey for the Netherlands’ Hockey Club Klein Zwitserland since 2017 and represented Argentina at the 2024 Paris Olympics. In an interview earlier this year, he said he’s received messages from fans thanking him for competing openly as a bisexual player. “People told me how happy they were that there was finally an openly bisexual hockey player playing in the Premier League,” he shared.

Together, Jetten and Keenan represent a new kind of visibility, one that blends politics, sports, and love with authenticity and pride. Their engagement, announced last year with a joyful “Soon to be Mr&Mr💍” post, already had queer fans around the world swooning. Now, as the Netherlands prepares to officially confirm its next leader, the couple’s story stands as a reminder of how far representation has come, and how powerful it can be when visibility meets leadership.

With Jetten’s projected victory, the Netherlands isn’t just electing a new openly gay prime minister; it’s sending a message to the world about what progress looks like, and who gets to embody it.
