Revival and Kathy Brown Make Us ‘Dance to the Music’

Revival is back with yet another hit cover of a classic! After making us scream Freedom at the top of our lungs during Pride Month with their cover of George Michael’s 1990 hit single, they’re back at it again with another banger: Dance to the Music. This time, they’ve teamed up with the powerhouse vocalist Kathy Brown to bring us a fresh take on the 1967 hit by Sly & The Family Stone.

For those not in the know, Sly & The Family Stone was an American band known for pioneering a fusion of soul, rock, and funk. Led by Sly Stone, the band created Dance to the Music with the intention of dominating both the pop and R&B charts. The song’s simple, repetitive lyrics emphasize the pure joy of dancing together, a sentiment Revival and Kathy Brown captures perfectly in their reimagined version.

Singing live in front of a dancing crowd, Kathy Brown’s powerful vocals bring this classic back to life, making us want to turn our offices into a dance floor.

Revival shared their inspiration for reinterpreting this iconic track for their eighth single: “The clever synthesis in the original version of a pop-friendly sound with psychedelic rock, funk, and Motown drew us to this particular record. But it was the song’s simple yet effective lyrics, with its repeated cry for the world to get on up and dance to the music, that really sealed the deal. These past few years have brought us challenges and changes that for many have seemed insurmountable and even unbearable. Music reminds us to dance, even through those moments when we least feel like it, while dancing reconnects us with the simple joy of being alive.”

Kathy Brown, reflecting on her participation as lead vocalist, adds, “When Revival asked me to collaborate on their rework of ‘Dance to the Music,’ it wasn’t a hard decision to make. Having worked on three other Revival projects, I know what these guys can deliver, and anything by Sly and the Family Stone is my jam. That was before being diagnosed with stage 4 cancer.

This past year has been a year of ups and downs for me, and the battle ain’t over. But I’m still here. With the support of my family, friends, and fans, I have weathered the storm and here I am—still singing and dancin’ in the rain. I’ve spent most of my life using the gifts the good Lord gave me to get people dancing, but today this song means even more to me than ever before. So please, let the children know that Kathy Brown is in town, and she’s got something to say!”
