Rebel Wilson comes out: introduces fans to new girlfriend

Rebel Wilson has some good news to share with her fans this Pride Month: there’s a new lady in her life!

On June 9, the Australian actress and comedian came out as a member of the LGBTQ community by confirming her romance with Lemon Ve Limon founder Ramona Agruma in a sweet Instagram post.

“I thought I was searching for a Disney Prince…but maybe what I really needed all this time was a Disney Princess,” she wrote alongside a picture of them both. Although Wilson didn’t label her sexuality, she concluded the caption with heart and rainbow emojis, as well as the #LoveIsLove hashtag.

Since the news broke, the star’s post has been met with an outpouring of love from fellow celebrities and fans alike. The post currently has 1,590,185  likes and more than 13K comments.

Last month, in an interview with People, Wilson revealed that she was in a relationship and that a mutual friend had set up the pair. She shared that they “spoke on the phone for weeks” before they met and that “that was a really good way to get to know each other. It was a bit old-school in that sense – very romantic.” She said, but didn’t specifically name Agruma.

“I think going through the process of finding more self-worth, I think that what you want in a partner is elevated and so it’s great to have someone who feels like an equal partner and be in a healthy relationship.

“There were times – I’m not saying with all my exes, they’re great – but there were some times that I was probably putting up with what I shouldn’t have. So it feels different to be in a really healthy relationship.”

Today it was revealed that an Australian newspaper, Sydney Morning Herald, had planned to out the actress before she could do it on her own terms. In an opinion piece, the columnist wrote: “In a perfect world, ‘outing’ same-sex celebrity relationships should be a redundant concept in 2022. Love is love, right? As Rebel Wilson knows, we do not live in a perfect world.

“So, it was an abundance of caution and respect that this media outlet emailed Rebel Wilson’s representatives on Thursday morning, giving her two days to comment on her new relationship with another woman, LA leisure wear designer Ramona Agruma, before publishing a single word.” The columnist described giving the actor advance warning about the piece as a “big mistake”, and said that by coming out on her own terms, Wilson had “gazumped the story.”

“Her choice to ignore our discreet, genuine, and honest queries was, in our view, underwhelming,” he added.

The piece was met with immediate backlash online and here at Q+, we want to join in on that. Outing people before they’re ready is not cool. Being a journalist or media outlet doesn’t give you the right to dictate how, when, and where a person comes out, no matter how public they are. Celebrities are in the public eye, yes, but they don’t owe us anything beyond their work. They, like us, deserve to have a private life. Learn to respect that, it’s 2022.

Wilson hasn’t commented on the matter so far, but we want to send her and her new girlfriend all our love and support. Although It was clearly a forced announcement, we’re happy that now both of you can live your love freely. Happy pride, cuties!
