Handsome Devil
This 2016 Irish coming-of-age comedy-drama directed by John Butler is a heartfelt celebration of individuality, courage, and unexpected friendship. Handsome Devil follows Ned (Fionn O’Shea), a lonely, music-loving student at an all-boys boarding school, who’s forced to room with Conor (Nicholas Galitzine), the school’s new rugby star. At first, they clash, Conor seems like the embodiment of everything Ned resents. But as they grow closer, a bond forms that challenges the rigid expectations of masculinity that dominate their school.
With sharp writing and moving performances, Handsome Devil tackles themes of identity, repression, and the importance of standing up for yourself and others. It’s a touching reminder that queerness and camaraderie can flourish in the unlikeliest of places. Plus it has fan-favorite Nicholas Galitzine playing yet another conflicted rainbow character.
Where to watch? Handsome Devil is available to stream on Disney+ or rent it on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, or Fandango at Home.
I Am Not Okay with This
Based on the graphic novel by Charles Forsman, this Netflix series follows Sydney, a high schooler dealing with all the usual teenage drama—crushes, grief, awkwardness—plus a developing set of telekinetic powers she can’t control. Played brilliantly by Sophia Lillis (It, Sharp Objects), Sydney is grappling with her sexuality and the emotional fallout of her father’s death when her powers start erupting at the worst possible moments.

I Am Not Okay With This blends coming-of-age awkwardness with supernatural mystery, and its queer subtext (and eventually, text) gives it extra resonance. It’s witty, tender, a little messy, and was gone far too soon after just one season. Still, it packs a punch and is well worth the binge.
Where to watch? I Am Not Okay With This is available to stream on Netflix.

Love at Second Sight by F.T. Lukens
F.T. Lukens’ latest YA romantic fantasy, Love at Second Sight, mixes murder visions, supernatural politics, and first crushes into one clever, heartfelt story. Cam Reynolds is used to being a human oddball in a school full of paranormals, where his best friend is a witch and his longtime crush is a werewolf. But when he has a sudden, violent psychic vision of a murder from the killer’s POV—right in front of half the school—everything changes.
Now newly-discovered as a rare clairvoyant, Cam finds himself in the supernatural spotlight, courted by powerful factions while trying to unravel the mystery before it’s too late. Lukens weaves together the thrill of a paranormal whodunit with an exploration of trust, found family, and queer identity. Cam’s voice is funny, anxious, and incredibly relatable, making this a must-read for fans of genre-bending queer YA.
Where to buy? Love at Second Sight is available to purchase at all reputable booksellers.
