Our Flag Means Death: HBO Max’s smash hit will sail for another season!
Just in time for this year’s Pride Month, HBO Max has announced that their smash hit queer pirate show, Our Flag Means Death, has been renewed for a second season! Yes, you heard that right, folks! Our beloved show will sail for another season! We can finally breathe again!
We spent weeks of anguish not knowing if the show would be renewed or not despite the more than evident success. We gotta confess that our trust issues got the better of us and we were scared. But our prayers to the Sea Gods were heard!
We’ve been renewed…as a crew!
HBO Max’s Head of Original Content, Sarah Aubrey expressed her excitement about the long-awaited renewal, “We are so happy to bring this truly one-of-a-kind series back! We congratulate David, Taika, Rhys, and the entire talented cast and crew, and thank the show’s fans for embracing it wholeheartedly.”
For his part, series creator David Jenkins said in a statement, “We felt the show was special while we were making it, but fans’ open-armed embrace of the inhabitants of the Revenge makes heading into a second season all the more sweet. Thanks to our team at HBO Max, our invested executive producers, and our wildly enthusiastic audience for making another voyage to this world possible.”
The first season of Our Flag Means Death ended with Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) and Blackbeard (Taika Waititi) finally coming to terms with their feelings for each other, but a series of unfortunate events and some seriously poor communication derailed the pair’s plan to run away and start a life together.
During an interview with The Verge earlier this year, Jenkins said that in case of getting another season, Our Flag Means Death would explore the emotional headspaces Stede and Blackbeard find themselves in following their falling out. In the same way that the first season was about the experience of truly falling in love for the first time, Jenkins said that the second season could dig into what it feels like to have one’s heart broken.
“The pirate stuff is there, but it’s about those things,” Jenkins said. “If you can follow the beats of having your heart shattered and trying to recover from it, and having done something that hurt someone you love and trying to repair that, that’s an interesting story.”
In addition to Darby and Waititi, season one starred an ensemble cast that included Nathan Foad, Samson Kayo, Vico Ortiz, Ewen Bremner, Joel Fry, Matt Maher, Kristian Nairn, Con O’Neill, Guz Khan, David Fane, Rory Kinnear, Samba Schutte, Nat Faxon, Fred Armisen, and Leslie Jones.
No date has been set for the second season, nor has more information been given about the cast that could be returning to reprise their roles. But worry not crew, as soon as we have more information about the new season we will be sharing it with you…stat.
In the meantime, let’s celebrate that Our Flag Means Death was renewed for another season by rewatching it for the millionth time!
