Nominations for the 34th GLAAD Media Awards are out!
Today, in a video that aired on GLAAD’s youtube channel, RuPaul’s Drag Race Salina Estitties and Sasha Colby announced the nominations for the 34th annual GLAAD Media Awards. All the nominees on the list come from works published, released, or broadcast between January 1 and December 31, 2022. The ceremony will be held in Los Angeles on March 30, 2023, and in New York City on May 13, 2023.
295 nominees were announced across 33 different categories. Two never before included categories were added to the list: Outstanding Podcast and Outstanding Live TC Journalism – Segment or Special. Other changes to the lineup include the division of the Outstanding Reality Program into two to nominate both reality competition series and non-competition independently. The Outstanding Kids & Family Programming category was also divided so that animated and live-action programs held their own independent categories.
“With violence, harmful legislation, false rhetoric, and other attacks on the LGBTQ community continuing to escalate, it’s more crucial than ever that our community remains visible and included in the stories that the world sees in film, television, music, journalism, and other forms of media,” said GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis.
“This year we have more nominees than ever before to represent immensely impactful projects that entertain, educate, and grow acceptance of LGBTQ people. From new stories that debunk lies about transgender youth to kids and family programming which allows all families to be represented, this year’s nominated media images are beloved by audiences and are creating real change,” continued Ellis.
As we looked at the incredibly long list of nominations for the 34th GLAAD Media Awards, we were overwhelmed with just how much representation is out there for the LGBTQ community right now. The list is plentiful and incredibly diverse, and definitely includes some of the Q+ Magazine faves. Titles such as Heartstopper, Stay on Board: The Leo Baker Story, Spoiler Alert, Smiley, Our Flag Means Death, and Mama’s Boy all made the cut and definitely rocked our queer socks off in 2022. What the nominations also showed us though is that we have so much more to consume! And that, folks, is a very good thing.
