New HBO Original Comedy Series ‘FANTASMAS’ Premieres on June 7
Hey there, folks! We’ve got some exciting news to share with you all. HBO is bringing us a brand-new original comedy series called FANTASMAS, and it’s heading to Max on June 7.
This show is the brainchild of the incredibly talented Julio Torres, who you might know from Problemista and HBO’s Los Espookys. And to be honest? We’re counting down the days until it premieres on Friday, June 7 cause we just know we’re going to love it.
New episodes will drop weekly throughout the six-episode season, so y’all better mark your calendars because the next six weeks are about to get busy!
Now, let’s talk about the official trailer. We’re going to be honest and say we have no way to describe it other than…very Torres-like. If you’re familiar with Torres’ surrealistic style, you know it’s 100% on brand, if not, then welcome to his world…it’s something. Enjoy your stay!
We said it when we reviewed Problemista (don’t miss its streaming release on Max on June 28), and we’ll say it again: we’d give anything to peek inside Torres’ mind just to see how it’s wired. His creative process is absolutely fascinating. But don’t take our word for it, check out the trailer for FANTASMAS here.
So, what’s FANTASMAS all about? Here’s the official logline to give you a taste:
“Writer, director, and comedian Julio Torres spins a fantastical six-part tale of when he lost a gold oyster earring. In his search to find the precious object, Julio reflects on the offbeat characters he encounters in introspective, often eerie, and always comedic vignettes set in a dreamy, alternate version of New York City. A kaleidoscope of color and surrealism, FANTASMAS weaves together stories of people looking for meaning, purpose, and connection in an increasingly isolating world.”
The HBO original comedy series stars Julio Torres as Julio, Martine Gutierrez as Vanesja, Tomas Matos as Chester, and Joe Rumrill as the voice of Bibo. But that’s not all! Nearly two dozen guest stars will make special appearances throughout the series’ six episodes, including Steve Buscemi, Paul Dano, Julia Fox, Alexa Demie, Emma Stone, Aidy Bryant, Bowen Yang, Kim Petras, Ziwe, and more. Oh, and did we mention DYLAN O’BRIEN IN LINGERIE?
FANTASMAS is created, directed, and written by Julio Torres. The series is executive produced by Julio Torres, Emma Stone, and Dave McCary for Fruit Tree, Alex Bach and Daniel Powell for Irony Point, and Olivia Gerke for 3 Arts, with Ali Herting serving as co-executive producer.
We don’t know exactly what to expect from this show, but it’s definitely a vibe. We can’t wait to stream FANTASMAS!
FANTASMAS will air on HBO starting June 7 at 11 p.m. ET/PT with a parallel release on Max. New episodes will drop weekly. Follow us on X and Instagram for all queer stuff!
