Netflix Announces New Comedy Special from Ellen DeGeneres
Netflix has just announced that comedian and former daytime television host, Ellen DeGeneres, will be returning to both the stage and the small screen with a new comedy special to air on the streaming platform. Degeneres will begin a multi-city stand-up tour across the United States, beginning in San Diego on June 19, 2024.
The 66-year-old confirmed that this was her last stand-up special. ” To answer the questions everyone is asking me – Yes, I’m going to talk about it. Yes, this is my last special. Yes, Portia really is that pretty in real life.”
This is not the first comedy special DeGeneres has done for Netflix, but it is the first one in a long while. Her 2018 special, Relatable, was received rather well, but DeGeneres herself became the center of quite a lot of negative media attention in 2021 and 2022 over allegations of staff mistreatment on her daytime talk show. The show finished airing on May 26, 2022.
Despite what you may think about her personally, the Emmy Award Winner is an excellent storyteller. She often talks about the struggles of being a queer woman in the entertainment industry. At 66 years old, as someone who lives a very opulent lifestyle amongst the rich and the famous, which very few people can properly understand, Degeneres has this knack for tapping into the ordinary and connecting with everyday people.
Robbie Praw, VP of Stand Up Comedy Formats at Netflix says, “There is nobody quite like Ellen. She is a true legend and pioneer in so many ways. We can’t wait to bring fans another one of her hilarious comedy specials later this year.”
The special will be produced by Ben Winston and Fulwell73 and will air on the streaming giant some time later in 2024. If you haven’t seen Relatable, stream it on Netflix now.
