Ncuti Gatwa and Edward Bluemel Sizzle in First Look at Born With Teeth Rehearsals
Last week, we got our first glimpse at Born With Teeth, and let’s just say, we’re already obsessed. The rehearsal photos, featuring Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa and Killing Eve’s Edward Bluemel, dropped like a literary thunderclap, giving us a taste of the tension, intimacy, and raw chemistry we can expect when the play premieres in London’s West End later this summer.
Co-produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company, Playful Productions, and Elizabeth Williams, Born With Teeth will run for an 11-week season at Wyndham’s Theatre from August 13 to November 1, 2025. This highly anticipated production is directed by Daniel Evans and marks the European premiere of Liz Duffy Adams’ play, which reimagines the relationship between literary titans Christopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare.
Set during the winter of 1591, Born With Teeth throws us into a world of surveillance, conspiracy, and creative rivalry. In a climate of political unrest and whispered danger, Marlowe and Shakespeare begin to meet in secret. What follows is a fierce and magnetic connection, equal parts collaboration and confrontation. And yes, it’s just as queer as it sounds.

Ncuti Gatwa called the play “smart, dark, sexy, sharp and funny,” adding: “This is like no version of Shakespeare and Marlowe that I’ve ever seen before, and I can’t wait for audiences to join us for the ride.” Honestly? Same.
Edward Bluemel echoed the excitement, saying: “To be stepping into the shoes of a young William Shakespeare is a huge thrill for any actor… There’s a real freshness and vitality to Liz’s writing that speaks directly to our world.” We love a period piece that knows how to be present.
Beyond the leads, the production features Justice Ritchie and Matt Pettifor as the understudies for Marlowe and Shakespeare, respectively. The creative team includes design by Joanna Scotcher, lighting by Neil Austin, sound by George Dennis, video design by Andrzej Goulding, movement direction by Ira Mandela Siobhan, and casting by Charlotte Sutton.
With Gatwa and Bluemel front and center, Born With Teeth promises to be a gripping—and gloriously queer—reimagining of literary history. And if these first look photos are any indication, we’re in for something bold, sexy, and unforgettable.
