JoJo Siwa No Longer Identifies as a Lesbian

If there’s one thing we know for sure, it’s that gender and sexuality aren’t one-size-fits-all, nor are they linear. Identity is a lifelong journey, filled with shifts, revelations, and moments of clarity that sometimes surprise even us. This week, JoJo Siwa gave us an honest and heartfelt update on their own personal journey, and we’re feeling all kinds of queer joy about it.

During Tuesday’s livestream of Celebrity Big Brother U.K., where the former Dance Moms star is currently competing, Siwa had a refreshingly open conversation with fellow housemate Danny Beard. The topic? Identity, labels, and the beautiful, fluid nature of queerness.

“I feel, like, so queer, do you know what I mean?” Siwa, 21, told Beard, who rose to fame on RuPaul’s Drag Race UK. “I think that’s the thing, I’ve always told myself I’m a lesbian, and I think being here I’ve realized: ‘Oh, I’m not a lesbian, I’m queer.’”

She continued, “And I think that’s really cool. I’m switching letters! Fuck the L, I’m going to the Q. That’s what I love about sexuality.”

To which Beard responded perfectly: “You are Q, honey. And you know that British people love a queue!”

Siwa first came out publicly in 2021 and has been openly sharing different chapters of their identity ever since. At the time, they didn’t land on a specific label, later trying on pansexual and most recently identifying as a lesbian in a 2023 video with Joey Graceffa. Now, they’re feeling more comfortable with queer, a term that embraces fluidity and doesn’t box them in.

In Big Brother, Siwa has also opened up about their gender journey, calling it “confusing” and expressing a connection with nonbinary people—though they’re not ready to use that label just yet. Siwa also shared that they use any pronouns, something they mentioned in promo for the series.

Unfortunately, their time on the show hasn’t been without its hardships. Actor Mickey Rourke directed homophobic language at Siwa in the third episode, along with what appeared to be a horrifying joke about corrective rape. Rourke was rightfully reprimanded and ultimately removed from the house.

Despite that, Siwa continues to use their platform to explore identity with bravery and humor. It’s a reminder that discovering who we are is never a straight path (pun very much intended) and that changing how we identify doesn’t make us less valid. It makes us human.

We’re rooting for JoJo as they continue to explore and express their truest self. Here’s to switching letters, breaking molds, and loving loud.
