Jeangu Macrooy Reminds Us That ‘Everybody Needs Somebody’ — And We’re Listening

Here at Q+, we’re huge Eurovision fans. And if you’re anything like us, you know that Eurovision is more than just a song contest—it’s a colorful celebration of culture, creativity, and unity across Europe (and far beyond). Over the years, it’s also become a powerful platform, launching the careers of incredible artists who continue to inspire long after the final votes are cast. One such artist is Jeangu Macrooy, the soul/pop powerhouse who represented the Netherlands in 2021 with Birth of a New Age, a bold and moving anthem written in response to the ongoing Black Lives Matter movement. The song stood out for its message of empowerment and pride, and it showed us that Jeangu isn’t afraid to use his voice to speak truth to power.

Today, he’s back with a new single, and it’s one we can’t stop playing: Everybody Needs Somebody. About the release, Jeangu shares that “‘Everybody Needs Somebody’ captures the essence of companionship, urging us to embrace others as our refuge when the world feels overwhelming.”

Built on a soulful groove and laced with a breezy pop rhythm, Everybody Needs Somebody radiates warmth and soul from the very first note. The track pulses with a sense of hope and intimacy, grounded in the belief that no one should have to weather life’s storms alone. It’s an ode to finding shelter in someone else, to being that safe place for another person, and to the quiet power of connection. With lyrics that speak to vulnerability and care, Jeangu invites us into a space that feels healing, especially for those of us in the LGBTQ+ community who know just how life-saving that kind of support can be. It’s joyful, uplifting, and built for both the stage and the soul.

To accompany the release, Jeangu also dropped a music video that brings the song’s spirit of connection to life through movement. As he performs, we watch dancers Liza and Maria Zhukova move through an expressive routine that mirrors the song’s emotional highs and gentle reassurances. It’s a tender and heartfelt visual that reflects the song’s core message.

Everybody Needs Somebody was written by J.A.U. Macrooy, with vocals and acoustic guitar by Jeangu Macrooy. All other instruments were played by Jasper Zuidervaart, who also produced, recorded, and mixed the track at Studio Zuidervaart. The song was mastered by Jeffrey de Gans at Da Goose Mastering. The music video is a film by Rauwkost Film, directed by Guido F. G. Jeurissen with Daan de Graaff as director of photography.

Born and raised in Suriname, Jeangu Macrooy moved to the Netherlands in 2014 and has been blazing his own trail ever since. An out and proud artist, Jeangu uses his platform to amplify queer voices and push for progress. With Everybody Needs Somebody, he’s not just delivering a soulful track that deserves a spot on every playlist, he’s reminding us why music matters, why connection matters, and why we’re all better when we show up for each other.

So go ahead—stream Everybody Needs Somebody on your favorite platform, and don’t forget to add it to that feel-good playlist. You know the one.
