It’s Official: Heartstopper Wrapped Production, and We’re Not Ready to Say Goodbye

We knew this day was coming, but that doesn’t make it any easier. It’s official: Heartstopper has wrapped production on the upcoming film, and we’re feeling every kind of way about it. Bitter and sweet doesn’t even begin to cover it. This isn’t just the end of a show, it’s the beginning of a goodbye to a universe that has meant the world to us and so many in the LGBTQ+ community.

Since Alice Oseman’s beautiful, inclusive world first came to life on screen in 2022, Heartstopper has given us something so rare: a joyful, affirming queer love story that never flinched from softness. It healed parts of us we didn’t even realize were broken, and showed a new generation of LGBTQ+ youth that they deserved love, visibility, and hope. So yeah, we’re getting a little sentimental, but can you blame us?

Even though we know the story isn’t officially over until next year, with the release of both the final volume of the graphic novel and this final film, learning that production has wrapped feels like the beginning of the end. And we’re not ashamed to say it: we’re devastated.

The news came straight from our beloved leads, Joe Locke and Kit Connor, who shared quiet, heartfelt tributes on Instagram. Locke posted a sweet photo of the two of them, saying goodbye to his character Charlie and a picture on his Stories with co-star Tobie Donovan (Isaac). Connor took to his Stories to share a shot of them inside Charlie’s room and simply said, “Thank you for everything.” No long captions, no teary videos, just two men of few words giving the moment the weight it deserves. Completely on brand, completely heart-wrenching.

Patrick Walters, one of the show’s executive producers, also shared some love on his Instagram Stories with two posts from the final day on set. Actresses Bel Priestly (Naomi), Rhea Norwood (Imogen), and Corinna Brown (Tara), and actors Tobie Donovan (Isaac) and Brad Riches (James), also shared a few snaps to share that Heartstopper wrapped production. Crew member Iso Attrill (filmmaker) joins them with their goodbye/wrapped post, too. You can catch their posts below.

We’re sure more cast and crew will follow suit soon, including Alice themselves, so we’ll be updating this article as they drop. We imagine it was a deeply emotional day on set, after all, these actors have grown up with their characters since the cast was first announced back in 2021. Saying goodbye couldn’t have been easy.

Update: Alice Oseman shared a heartfelt message on their Instagram account along with a picture of an N+C engraved on a tree, “Day 35. That’s a wrap on the Heartstopper film 🍂 I’d never worked in a team in my career before working on the Heartstopper screen adaptation, and the Heartstopper shoots have shown me what magic can happen when so many creative minds come together.” They said.

“Heartstopper means the world to me, and it’s always been a little scary to put it into other people’s hands, but it’s been met with so much care and passion and dedication and love. I’m so thankful to everyone who has been a part of it… so far! Now we begin the edit!!!”

But if there’s a silver lining in all this, it’s the way they chose to end it. Fans who were lucky enough to be on set as extras today shared pictures of the cast and crew filming what appears to be a Pride parade. That’s right, the last day of Heartstopper was a celebration. And honestly, we couldn’t imagine a more fitting goodbye. A queer show, with a mostly queer cast and crew, saying farewell with joy, love, and Pride? That’s the kind of poetic ending that only Heartstopper could deliver.

We know more goodbyes are coming—when the film drops, when the final comic comes out—but for now, these little moments help us prepare our hearts. We know this story will live on in our hearts, in our shelves, and on our screens forever. But still, you know? Heartstopper wrapped production, and we’re going to miss it more than words can say.
