It’s Asexual Awareness Week and We Are Celebrating!
For those that don’t know, this week is Asexual Awareness Week and here at the Q+ Magazine offices, we’re celebrating. We strongly believe that visibility, representation, and the power of storytelling is the best way to combat bigotry and change the hearts and minds of the masses, so that’s exactly what we plan to spend this week doing for our asexual community members!
Asexuality is misunderstood by many, including by folks within the LGBTQ+ community, and because of this, it is probably the most controversial of the rainbow family identities. However, it doesn’t have to be this way. With a little education, a lot of open-mindedness, and a desire to understand and empathize, our asexual family members can (and should) also receive the love and acceptance that the rest of us so desire.
We like to do things a little differently around here, and we didn’t just want to spend this Asexual Awareness Week writing pieces about asexual characters that we’ve already talked about before (you can read our latest article here). While characters of the ace variety are incredibly important to promote and discuss, and we definitely need more of them in our queer spaces, this Ace Awareness Week, we wanted you to hear from the people impacted by this week themselves.
There is no more powerful storytelling method than stories shared by real people, living real lives, and experiencing real things. So we put out a call and y’all responded. The number of ace people who came forward and volunteered to share intimate details of their lives with everyone was humbling.
Our ace folks want to be heard, so heard they will be.
The ace spectrum is so vast and varied and the stories that our ace community members have are as well. This week, we want to highlight the differences within the community and show just how diverse and incredible this part of our LGBTQ+ community is.
For the rest of this week, we’ll be publishing stories that members of the ace community have graciously agreed to share in the name of visibility, understanding, and education. So if you’re a little unsure how you feel about asexuality, or really just don’t feel like you understand it well enough, this week we urge you to read all of these stories – both large and small.
We will be releasing articles frequently for the rest of the week so stay tuned and celebrate these diverse and dynamic members of our LGBTQ+ family.
