Hunter Schafer joins ‘The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’
Euphoria star Hunter Schafer has officially joined the cast of Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, the highly anticipated film adaptation of the famed prequel of the same title released in May 2020.
According to early reports, Schafer will appear opposite Tom Blyth (Billy The Kid) and Rachel Zegler (West Side Story) as Tigris Snow, the cousin, and confidante of Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth). If you’re a fan of the franchise, then you know that one day Coriolanus will become the autocratic ruler of the dystopian world of the books and films – the feared President Snow, played by Donald Sutherland (Pride & Prejudice) in the original movies – and that Tigris becomes a stylist in the Capitol. Tigris was originally played by Eugenie Bondurant in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 movie.
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is set to be released in theaters worldwide on November 17, 2023. It follows the Snow family, which has fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol. With the 10th annual Hunger Games fast approaching, Snow is assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird (Rachael Zegler), a girl tribute from the impoverished District 12. Throughout the story, we get a closer look at how the Hunger Games transformed over the years and how Snow eventually became the villainous politician who in the future torments Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence).
During the 2022 MTV Movie & TV Awards on June 5, Lionsgate debuted the first teaser for the upcoming The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes prequel. Though no footage from the film was revealed, the teaser shows a gold snake slithering toward a gold bird on a tree, both shedding snow from themselves.
“You’re invited to return to the Games,” the text in the trailer reads. “In 2023, the world will discover who is a songbird and who is a snake.”
The prequel will be directed by Francis Lawrence, who previously directed the franchise’s Catching Fire, Mockingjay – Part 1 and Mockingjay – Part 2. Nina Jacobson and her producing partner Brad Simpson, who oversaw the other films in the series, return as producers while Hunger Games series author Suzanne Collins will serve as an executive producer alongside Tim Palen. Michael Lesslie will write the script, based on Collins’ book.
Per an official press release from Lionsgate, additional cast members for the film include: Jerome Lance as Marcus, a tribute from District 2; Ashley Liao as Clemensia Dovecote, one of Coriolanus’s closest friends and mentor to a tribute from District 11; Knox Gibson as Bobbin, a tribute from District 8; Mackenzie Lansing as Coral, a tribute from District 4; Aamer Husain as Felix Ravinstill, a mentor to a tribute from District 11; Nick Benson as Jessup, a tribute from District 12; Laurel Marsden as Mayfair Lipp, a girl from District 12; Lilly Cooper as Arachne Crane, a mentor to a tribute from District 10; Luna Steeples as Dill, a tribute from District 11; and Hiroki Berrecloth as Treech, a tribute from District 7.
In addition to her work on Euphoria, Hunter Schafer is currently in production on Cuckoo, an upcoming horror film from Luz director Tilman Singer.
