‘Heartstopper’ to Wrap Up With a Feature Film

After months of waiting (and let’s be real, low-key panicking) over whether Heartstopper would get a proper send-off, we finally have our answer — and it’s a good one. On the anniversary of the beloved series’ debut on Netflix, we’ve learned that Heartstopper won’t be returning for a traditional fourth season. But before you reach for the tissues, hold tight: Nick and Charlie’s love story will conclude in a feature film.

That’s right. Heartstopper is officially getting a movie to wrap up its story, and honestly, we couldn’t be more relieved and thrilled.

Given the current climate for LGBTQ+ storytelling on streaming platforms and the worrying trend of queer shows being abruptly canceled, we’re choosing to see this as a huge win. Between the state of the world and the fact that Alice Oseman’s graphic novel series is nearly complete, this movie gives us what so many shows never get: the chance to say goodbye properly.

The final chapter of Heartstopper aka the feature film will follow the events of the not-yet-fully-published Volume 6 of Oseman’s comics (You can read it for free on Tumblr and Tapas). According to the official synopsis, “Nick and Charlie are inseparable, but with Nick preparing to leave for university and Charlie finding new independence at school, the reality of a long-distance relationship begins to weigh on them. Doubts take hold, and their relationship faces its biggest challenge yet. Meanwhile, their friends are also navigating the ups and downs of love and friendship, confronting the bittersweet challenges of growing up and moving on. Can first loves really last forever?”

Wash Westmoreland (Still Alice, Colette) will direct the film, with Kit Connor and Joe Locke not only returning as Nick and Charlie but also stepping into executive producer roles. Production is set to begin in the summer of 2025, so if all goes well, we could be watching the final chapter of Heartstopper around this time next year. Fingers crossed.

Creator Alice Oseman shared their excitement about the feature film, saying, “I am completely overjoyed that we will get to tell the end of the Heartstopper story. I’m so grateful to everyone who has worked hard to make this possible and to the incredible fans of Heartstopper for your patience and passion. I cannot wait to bring this story to a magical conclusion.”

Using their social media platforms, the writer also added about the renewal, “I’m deeply relieved and so excited about this new creative venture. I’ve written the script and we’re hard at work already. I know you’ll have a lot of questions, and I’ll be able to talk about it more very soon, but for now, let’s CELEBRATE! Heartstopper is getting its ending!!!!!! 🍂”

We know some fans may feel disappointed that we’re not getting a full final season, but all things considered, this is a beautiful compromise — and one many other queer stories never get. We’re getting closure. We’re getting the end of Nick and Charlie’s story. And that matters.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on any updates on the feature film and will report back as soon as we know more. In the meantime, it sounds like the perfect excuse to rewatch seasons 1 through 3 and celebrate the fact that this deeply meaningful, joyful, and unapologetically queer story is getting the ending it deserves.
