Heartstopper Season 3: Kizzy Edgell Talks Darcy’s Journey in New Season

A few days ago, we had the amazing opportunity to chat with Kizzy Edgell, who plays the unforgettable Darcy in Heartstopper, and we discussed what makes this character so special in Season 3. Describing Darcy as “chaotic, whimsical, and awkward,” Kizzy gave us an insightful look into their character’s personality and what it’s been like portraying someone so vibrant yet emotionally complex. Darcy’s chaos often brings comedic relief, but as Kizzy explained, their story this season also explores some of the more vulnerable and intense moments of adolescence, making their character more relatable than ever.

One of Kizzy’s favorite moments from Season 3 is a key scene early on where Tara (Corinna Brown) asks Darcy to move out and accept their grandmother’s invitation to stay at her home. Filming that scene, Kizzy said, was particularly emotional, as it felt like a real breakup for them due to Corinna’s powerful performance. They praised their co-star, noting how talented Corinna is and how her ability to make the scene feel so real added layers to Darcy and Tara’s relationship. According to Kizzy, this scene stood out as one of their proudest moments this season.

The relationship between Darcy and Tara has been a central part of Heartstopper, and Kizzy highlighted the patience Tara consistently shows toward Darcy. Even though Darcy brings a lot of energy and baggage to the relationship, Tara’s love and understanding shine through, allowing their relationship to grow stronger despite the challenges they face. Kizzy described this dynamic as “so sweet,” emphasizing how the two characters continuously forgive each other and keep coming back to one another despite their ups and downs.

Kizzy also discussed how Darcy’s gender identity evolved throughout the season, aligning somewhat with their own personal journey. They shared how the show didn’t need to alter Darcy’s character to reflect their personal journey—yet Heartstopper did. Kizzy revealed that while Darcy’s nonbinary identity is an important aspect of who they are, the show handled it in a way that felt casual and authentic, without turning it into a major plot point. This subtle approach to LGBTQ+ representation, Kizzy noted, is one of the things they love most about Heartstopper.

From fun behind-the-scenes memories like filming at a fairground to the more challenging emotional scenes, Kizzy’s reflections on Darcy’s growth and their own experiences on set give us a greater appreciation for the character’s arc in Season 3. Tune in to the full interview below to hear more about Kizzy’s thoughts on Darcy’s evolution, their favorite moments, and what lies ahead for the beloved character.
