Heartstopper Season 3: Exclusive Alice Oseman Interview

Heartstopper Season 3 is out, y’all, and it’s absolutely everything! If you haven’t watched the season yet, we strongly recommend you stop reading, cue up Netflix, and binge all eight episodes as quickly as you can before hitting play on this interview. We sat down with Alice Oseman and asked some big questions about the characters they’ve created and the Heartstopper world in general, and we’ve got spoilers! Oh, do we have spoilers!

Alice Oseman opens up about the process of adapting one’s own work from a graphic novel into a screen production and the highs and lows that go along with such a task. They acknowledge that what works for print doesn’t always work for the world of television and some changes to their story had to be made.

They talk about Nick (Kit Connor) and Charlie (Joe Locke) and the relationship that has evolved between the two. As season 3 dives deeply into Charlie’s mental health issues and his resulting eating disorder, there’s quite a discussion about the heaviness of that topic as well. Alice Oseman makes quite a few profound statements about love in this interview and how they wanted to convey those feelings through the characters of Nick and Charlie. They also talk about their upcoming and final Heartstopper graphic novel and what the future holds for these two young lovebirds.

Our Q+ staffer asks about Isaac’s (Tobie Donovan) journey this season as he forays into the world of asexuality while trying to juxtapose the couplings going on around him. Alice Oseman talks about how isolating that can be for an asexual person and how that representation plays out in Isaac’s story arc.

We left nothing out folks. We’ve also got the skinny on Tao (Will Gao) and Elle (Yasmin Finney), Tara (Corinna Brown), and Darcy’s (Kizzy Edgell) important journey this season comes up as well. Alice Oseman talks about their love for Imogen (Rea Norwood) and the development of this character’s storyline – spoiler alert – it wasn’t always supposed to turn out this way with Imogen!

Will there be a Heartstopper Season 4? Alice Oseman talks about that as well! So sit back, grab some popcorn, and check out our exciting chat below.
