Happy bisexual visibility day: Showcasing our fave male bisexual babes on screen
It’s not a secret that the overwhelming majority of queer screen media is geared toward men. So it was quite a pleasant surprise for us when we sat down to compile our Bisexual Visibility Day piece that there was an overwhelming amount of quality female bisexual characters on our screens over recent times. So, we split our coverage of Bisexual Visibility Day into two based on gender representation. If you haven’t already seen it, you’ll find our female coverage here. Keep reading below for our fave male bisexual babes on screens in recent times!
Like our fave bisexual femmes on screen, the range and quality of male characters to choose from is plentiful. This is a win for the bisexual community, as representation for our bisexual community members hasn’t always been great.
We’ve narrowed it down to five characters, but these are by no means the only quality bisexual men on our screens. Appearing in no particular order, journey with us as we celebrate Bisexual Visibility Day with some of our fave male bisexual babes gracing our screens!
Magnus Bane
In the Shadowhunters television show, just like in the source material, Magnus Bane (Harry Shum Jr.) is a bisexual warlock who has lived for centuries. His immortality means that he has experienced all kinds of things in life and over the years, Magnus has dated both men and women.
When Shadowhunters picks up, Magnus begins a romantic interlude with Alec Lightwood (Matthew Daddario), a young, gay, and closeted Shadowhunter from an important family.
Although Magnus and Alec are not the primary couple in the source material, they definitely became the center of the television show as fans all around the world flocked to watch this incredibly beautiful queer relationship play out on our screens.
Their relationship endures many ups and downs as the three seasons of Shadowhunters evolve, but as the series comes to a close at the end of season 3, fans get to experience the very rare thing of watching these two adoring men marry one another. Even though the show was canceled in 2019, Shadowhunters remains incredibly popular within the queer community because of this relationship.
Nick Nelson
Found in the Heartstopper universe, Nick Nelson (Kit Connor) is a crowd fave among the bisexual community, and definitely one of our fave male bisexual babes on screen! In the first season of Heartstopper, Nick goes through a bit of a bisexual awakening after developing a friendship with Charlie Spring (Joe Locke). Charlie has quite an impressive crush on rugby-lad Nelson and it isn’t long before Nick realizes that he feels the same about Charlie in return.
It sends him into a bit of a tailspin because he has never really considered the fact that he could be into guys before, but in a moment of beautiful clarity, Nick realizes that he is bisexual, not gay as he perhaps first thought, and the rest is beautiful bisexual history for Nick Nelson.
Nick and Charlie are surrounded by a group of really fabulous queer friends that include lesbians, trans friends, gay friends and asexual friends. Not all of them understand their identities in the first season, but as the second season comes to a close, the full spectrum of representation in this show is magnificent.
Nick Nelson is gentle, fiercely protective over Charlie, and an all-round stand-up guy. It’s easy to see why people all around the world are head-over-heels for this character.
Alex Claremont-Diaz
Originally appearing in the New York Times Bestseller Red, White & Royal Blue, this character only very recently burst onto our screens when the Amazon Studios version of the story was released worldwide this year. Alex Claremont-Diaz (Taylor Zakhar-Perez) is the mixed-race, bisexual son of the President of the United States who just so happens to fall in love with Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitizine), the Prince of England.
In the source material, Prince Henry is Alex’s bisexual awakening, but onscreen Alex definitely has some understanding of his sexuality already. He hasn’t told anyone about himself yet, except the people he has fooled around with, but the fact that Alex is into guys is not a surprise to this dynamic character. What he is surprised by, however, is that he’s fallen for Henry (who definitely wasn’t on his radar or his bingo card).
But fall in love, they do. Deeply, passionately, and exuberantly, the pair unintentionally set out to make some history. Clouded by centuries of the homophobic crown, Henry is deeply closeted and struggles with the freedom that Alex seems to enjoy in his own skin. Despite the fact that this story has the potential to be covered in homophobia, it’s really just a beautiful love story about a bisexual guy and a gay guy making their way together in the world.
We definitely joined the ranks of people who list Alex Claremont-Diaz as one of their fave male bisexual babes… maybe ever.
Michael Guerin
Roswell, New Mexico enjoyed 4 seasons on our television screens, and took on a life of its own, differing substantially from the original show from the 1990s. In the reboot, the character of Michael Guerin (Michael Vlamis) is an alien and bisexual. While Michael definitely has had girlfriends in his life, Michael’s great love in this show is Alex (Tyler Blackburn).
Michael met Alex when they were teenagers and Alex knows of Michael’s true identity. When the show opens, they’re very much in the throws of love and consider one another soulmates. They break up for a while in season 2 though, because what is television without a little love fuelled angst, however, they end up reconciling at the end of season 3.
Pain, right? That’s a long time to be separated for soulmates.
In season 4, Alex gets himself abducted, and so starts an epic quest of Michael heading out into the universe to search for his love. When he finds him, the two end up getting married and Alex takes Michael’s last name.
In Roswell, New Mexico, these queers end up happily ever after as the show comes to a close.
Pass the tissues, please. We just love these two so much.
Jesper Fahey
Appearing in the Shadow and Bone universe, Jesper Fahey (Kit Young) is a fave among the bisexual community. Openly attracted to both men and women, Jesper identifies as bisexual. One of the really cool things about this world though, is that bisexuality isn’t considered to be something of difference by any of the characters, and Jesper’s sexuality is completely normalized in this world.
In season 1 of Shadow and Bone, Jesper is introduced to audiences as someone who is just looking for a good time. Casual, no strings attached is his kind of deal. However, as time goes on, a relationship develops between himself and Wylan van Eck (Jack Wolfe). The lore of opposites attracting definitely binds these two characters though, and Wylan makes it clear that casual is not his deal.
Jesper can’t stay away from the man, and the two end up sorting out this discrepancy in expectations between them in season 2. The normalization of queerness in this fictional world is a rarity for the queer community and Jesper’s understanding of himself makes him one of our fave male bisexual babes on screens of late.
As Bisexual Visibility Day plays out around the world we’re celebrating by appreciating the hard work and dedication that has been done of late to improve bisexual representation on screens. Education happens through visibility, and that means that the quality of the representation circulating is crucial for deepening understanding and empathy everywhere. So today we stand up and celebrate our bisexual babes all around the world and say: we see you, we hear you, and you are loved!
