Halsey calls out “fans” who walked out of their concert because they used the stage to speak out about abortion rights
As y’all know, this past Friday (June 24), in a landmark decision, the U.S. Supreme Court officially overturned Roe v. Wade, declaring that the constitutional right to abortion for menstruating people no longer exists. This decision has sparked a lot of reactions and one of the first celebrities to share their thoughts on the matter was Halsey.
As soon as the news broke, the ‘Without Me’ singer took to social media to speak out about the matter. “I have been advocating for abortion, reproductive rights, and bodily integrity for as long as I’ve had a platform and I’m running out of ways to word and frame the severity of the impact that fundamentalism has on our country.
“I know some of you look to my page for information or guidance but I need a little bit of time to speak to some people with more authority and experience than me and gather my thoughts. I don’t want to just contribute to antagonistic noise. I’m just defeated at the moment.” They first tweeted.
Halsey is in the middle of their Love and Power world tour and has been using their concerts as a platform to raise awareness and share informative graphics on the subject with their fans.
“On June 24th, 2022 The Supreme Court reversed nearly 50 years of precedent and overturned Roe v. Wade, ending the federal constitutional right to abortion.” The first graphic read. “Half of the states are expected to ban abortion. Some will prosecute those who seek abortion or aid those in seeking abortion.
“This catastrophic attack on bodily autonomy will only encourage more dangerous legislation, impacting vulnerable communities the most.” The message continued. “Don’t wait for revolutionaries to change the world. Be the revolutionaries. No one is coming to do the work for us. The work is ours and we have to do it now.” It concluded.
During a stop in Phoenix, Arizona, Halsey used the stage once again to raise awareness of the situation and encourage fans to speak up and protect each other’s rights.
In a widely shared video posted by a fan posted on Twitter, Halsey can be heard speaking to the audience, “Here in Arizona, you guys got to promise me that you’re gonna do that work so that the person to the left of you and the right of you has that right for the rest of their lives,” They said to a cheering crowd.
“If you don’t like it you can go home right now, I don’t care.” They added. “If you don’t like it I don’t know why you came to a Halsey concert because I’ve never been shy that this is how I feel.”
She went on to shout, “My body!” and their fans responded with, “My choice!”
According to reports from concertgoers some people took Halsey’s vocal pro-choice’s message as their cue to leave the premises. The singer responded to that hours later with this call out tweet:
Today, they expanded on the matter in two more tweets, expressing how they weren’t sorry for expressing themselves in their concert.
