Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation: The global English release
Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation (Mo Dao Zu Shi) by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu, the exceptionally popular web novel on which The Untamed was based, has been translated into English and released worldwide! On December 14, 2021, the first of five volumes was released and shipped to people all around the world. The original web novel (released in Chinese) was over 100 chapters long and remains an incredibly popular story among Chinese readers, despite the country’s complicated relationship with homosexuality.
In case you’re new to the story and need the 4-1-1, here’s what the blurb on the back of the cover says:
“Wei Wuxian was once one of the most outstanding men of his generation, a talented and clever young cultivator who harnessed martial arts, knowledge, and spirituality into powerful abilities. But when the horrors of war led him to seek a new power through demonic cultivation, the world’s respect for his skills turned to fear, and his eventual death was celebrated throughout the land.

Years later, he awakens in the body of an aggrieved young man who sacrifices his soul so that Wei Wuxian can exact revenge on his behalf. Though granted a second life, Wei Wuxian is not free from his first, nor the mysteries that appear before him now. Yet this time, he’ll face it all with the righteous and esteemed Lan Wangji at his side, another powerful cultivator whose unwavering dedication and shared memories of their past will help shine a light on the dark truths that surround them.”
It’s an incredible love story for the ages. One that will make you feel warm and full but also very, very empty at the same time. The relationship that grows between Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian is so epic that it has drawn the attention of millions of people all around the world. The story was already incredibly popular when it just existed as a web novel on the internet in China. However, since The Untamed was created, the franchise/world of The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation is now a force to be reckoned with.
The first volume of the story contains the first thirty-two chapters. Despite only containing so few of the story’s chapters, this volume spans a whopping 350 pages. Additionally, the volume contains a detailed name and character guide, and a glossary of Chinese terms at the back. Very helpful for those not familiar with the Chinese language or traditions.
The most notable aspect of this volume though is the illustrations that have been included. Three illustrators contributed to this particular volume: Jin Fang, Marina Privalova, and Moo. Some in color, some in black and white, they serve as a beautiful contrast to the story.
