Fanatical: The Catfishing of Tegan and Sara Trailer Drops!

The first trailer of the Hulu’s new documentary Fanatical: The Catfishing of Tegan and Sara is now available to watch! Tegan and Sara rose to global stardom as one of the most influential queer indie rock bands of their generation. The twin sisters formed the band in 1995 in Calgary, Canada, and went on to conquer the queer music scene for the next decade.

It was a transitional time for queer indie music, especially female queer bands, and fans of Tegan and Sara declared their fan spaces a safe place for queer people during a time in the music industry where such a thing was sorely lacking. But a bad actor took advantage of the community’s trust and comfort. Tegan and Sara’s world turned upside down when Tegan’s personal files were hacked in 2011, revealing the dark side of fame and fandom.

This is a sprawling yet intimate story of how Tegan’s identity was stolen and weaponized in a complex catfish scheme to ensnare members of this community. The film is an examination of the severe ripple effect of mistrust, anxiety, and self-doubt that resulted from Fegan’s (Fake Tegan) actions.

Filmmaker Erin Lee Carr, who is also responsible for Britney Vs. Spears navigates their way into Tegan’s world to systematically help her investigate and find the person stalking her and harassing her fans for the last fifteen years. The documentary weaves in investigations completed in 2011 as well as new victims, potential suspects, and sinister revelations that will leave you reeling.

Told through Tegan’s own voice, the voices of deceived fans, a trove of visceral communications between fake Tegan and their victims, and the visual history of the band’s behind-the-scenes archive, this documentary feature is a thriller, a caper, a whodunnit, and an intimate personal journey rolled into one. It cuts to the heart of love and betrayal, fame and fandom, desire and delusion in the 21st century.

We smell a Tegan and Sara resurgence on the way!

The documentary drops on Hulu on October 18, 2024. Follow us on X and Instagram for all queer stuff!
