Every Body: The documentary about intersexuality the world needs right now
Premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival in early June, the Focus Features special documentary Every Body is slated to hit theaters for regular viewing on June 30. Directed by Oscar-nominated documentarian Julie Cohen, Every Body is the important story of three people who have moved through many challenges to be the bright and shining people they are today.
The documentary recounts their childhood experiences. The film reveals three experiences marked by shame, secrecy, and non-consensual surgeries. Despite the challenges life imposed on them in their younger years, Every Body reveals these people to be thriving adults who ignored the medical advice of those around them. They were told to hide their identity and keep the truths of their bodies a secret, yet they all made the decision to come out to the world as their authentic selves.
Woven into the story is a stranger-than-fiction case of medical abuse, featuring exclusive footage from the NBC News archives, which helps explain the modern-day treatment of intersex people.
Actor and screenwriter River Gallo (they/them), political consultant Alicia Roth Weigel (she/they), and Ph.D. student Sean Saifa Wall (he/him) are now leaders in a fast-growing global movement advocating for a greater understanding of the intersex community and an end to unnecessary surgeries.
Director Julie Cohen is known for her role in the theatrical documentary titled RGB. Cohen directed and produced the successful project. Her role in the film Julia landed her an Academy Award nomination. Before starting her own production company Better Than Fiction, Cohen worked as a staff producer at NBC News for nine years. She has since gone on to produce and direct a plethora of titles. The story of Every Body is in good hands indeed.
