Ethan Coen’s Honey Don’t! Gets August Theatrical Release
Focus Features has officially set an August 22 wide theatrical release for Honey Don’t!, Ethan Coen’s latest dark comedy, and honestly, we’re counting down the days. The film stars Margaret Qualley as Honey O’Donahue, a small-town lesbian private investigator whose latest case plunges her deep into a tangled web of bizarre deaths, questionable religious rituals, and one very suspiciously charming church leader played by none other than Chris Evans.
Yes, you read that right. Chris Evans in what sounds like a twisted cult comedy? We’re in.
Set against the dusty backdrop of Bakersfield, California, Honey Don’t! promises to be a wild ride, equal parts mystery, dark humor, and unapologetically queer. Alongside Qualley and Evans, the cast is stacked with talent: Aubrey Plaza, Charlie Day, Billy Eichner, Talia Ryder, Gabby Beans, Lera Abova, Kristen Connolly, and Lena Hall round out the ensemble. This lineup is giving full chaotic queer energy, and we’re living for it.
Co-written by Coen and his longtime collaborator Tricia Cooke, Honey Don’t! marks the second entry in what the duo has dubbed their “lesbian B-movie trilogy”—a cinematic saga that began with last year’s Drive-Away Dolls, another Focus Features gem that also starred Qualley. If Honey Don’t! is anything like its predecessor, we’re expecting genre-blending mayhem, offbeat characters, and a refreshingly queer perspective at the heart of it all.
The film has already wrapped production, as confirmed by the New Mexico Film Office back in May 2024, and it’s set to make its world premiere at the 78th Cannes Film Festival in the Midnight Screenings section. Translation: it’s going to get weird, and we can’t wait.
With Universal Pictures International handling overseas distribution, this one’s aiming for global queer chaos in the best possible way.
