Dylan O’Brien and James Sweeney’s Twinless Hits Theaters This September
Remember that viral Twinless clip that hit the internet back in February? The one someone leaked from their Sundance screening access? Yeah, we’re still thinking about it too. Well, after months of buzz and speculation, the upcoming queer dramedy starring Dylan O’Brien and James Sweeney finally has a release date.
Twinless is officially hitting U.S. theaters on September 5, thanks to a new deal with Roadside Attractions and Lionsgate. The news comes via Variety, who got the exclusive. While Roadside will handle the U.S. release, Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions has picked up international rights. No word yet on when folks outside the U.S. will get to see it, but fingers crossed it’s not too far behind.
James Sweeney—who wrote, directed, produced, and stars in the film—shared in a statement: “I’m delighted to pair up with Roadside and Lionsgate to bring our film into theaters nationwide. I’m holding ample space for Twinless and look forward to overthinking future press quotes.”

Roadside Attractions co-presidents Eric d’Arbeloff and Howard Cohen are equally excited about the project, calling Twinless “a genuine comedic crowd pleaser and sophisticated examination of male friendship in the internet age.”
They went on to praise the cast and crew, saying: “Dylan O’Brien’s performance in a dual role is nothing less than a star-defining turn and multi-hyphenate Sweeney declares himself a generational talent both in front of and behind the camera. We are confident the film will connect with theatrical audiences nationwide as strongly as it did at Sundance.”
Producer David Permut echoed the sentiment, highlighting the film’s razor-sharp wit and emotional resonance: “The sharp comedy depicts complex characters in such an irreverent, emotional and hysterical way. The chemistry between Dylan and James is absolutely combustible and it’s a film that is best seen in a theater.”
Twinless follows two young men who meet at a support group for people grieving the loss of their twin. What begins as a strange, shared circumstance quickly evolves into an unlikely but deeply intense friendship. The film promises a blend of comedy and heartache with a strong queer emotional core we can’t wait to experience in full.
Alongside O’Brien and Sweeney, the cast includes Aisling Franciosi (Speak No Evil), Lauren Graham (Gilmore Girls), Tasha Smith (Survival of the Thickest), Chris Perfetti (Abbott Elementary), François Arnaud (Blindspot), Susan Park (Snowpiercer), and Cree Cicchino (And Just Like That…).
Behind the scenes, the film is produced by David Permut and James Sweeney, with Dylan O’Brien, Miky Lee, Ali Jazayeri, David Gendron, and Liz Destro executive producing. Alex Astrachan is on board as co-producer.
We’ll be keeping a close eye on Twinless and updating you the second we hear anything about international release dates or new clips. But for now, clear your September schedule…Twinless is coming, and we’re so ready.
