Coming-of-Age Film ‘My Old Ass’: A First Look

My Old Ass looks like it’s going to be a queer smash hit. In this coming-of-age film, eighteen-year-old Elliot (Maisy Stella) has a YOLO moment and eats some magic mushrooms. While she’s tripping, she has an apparition of the thirty-nine-year-old version of herself (Aubrey Plaza), who comes to her with warnings and token pieces of advice about how her younger self should be living her life.

In the trailer, thirty-nine-year-old Elliot puts her number into her younger version’s phone and long after the trip is worn off, calls young Elliot out of the blue. Despite the fact that they appear to have been brought together by some drug-fueled frenzy, they remain connected throughout the story.

As depicted in the trailer, young Elliot seems confused about her sexuality but definitely leans somewhere on the queer spectrum. She seems to be struggling to accept herself and like the person she is, while perhaps also struggling with her family connections as well. All run-of-the-mill coming-of-age stuff, sure, but My Old Ass definitely has a fresh vibe to it.

When young Elliot asks older Elliot if they can kiss, our attention was officially piqued. When older Elliot says no, younger Elliot replies with, “Can I at least touch my old ass?” and look, this is definitely the kind of self-exploration we’re here for.
