Close to You: Elliot Page’s Heartfelt Return to the Big Screen

Directed by Dominic Savage and starring Elliot Page, Close to You had its world premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, and we’re thrilled to announce it’s finally coming to theaters on August 16.

This touching film tells the story of Sam (Elliot Page), who hasn’t been home since his transition. After four years in Toronto, Sam takes a long-dreaded trip back to Cobourg for his father’s birthday. On the train, he runs into Katherine (Hillary Baack), a high school friend with her own complicated life. As they reconnect, feelings from their unresolved past begin to bubble to the surface.

Sam’s journey home is filled with tension, not because of outright rejection but due to the unsolicited comments and questions he anticipates about his transition. The film delves into the emotional burden Sam carries, highlighting the weight of his family’s ignorance and discomfort.

Close to You is a profoundly observant drama about coming home as yourself, only to be treated like a different person. It’s a powerful new film from star and producer Elliot Page, capturing an all-too-familiar experience for many in the LGBTQ+ community.

As Sam, Page shows us the fraught process of reconnecting with loved ones while dealing with the dread of returning to an unwelcoming space. His performance is honest and deeply felt, illustrating the patience and self-assertion required to live unapologetically.

In addition to its compelling narrative, Close to You marks Page’s first big-screen acting role since 2017. The Oscar-nominated performer, who came out as trans in 2020, is known for standout roles in films like Juno, Whip It, and Inception. On television, Page has captivated audiences in series such as Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy, and Tales of the City.

Don’t miss Close to You when it debuts in theaters on August 16.
