Bros: The first LGBTQ major studio rom-com release
In 2022, Universal Pictures will be the first major film studio to release a mainstream romantic comedy about two gay men. Bros was slated for release in August of 2022 but has been pushed back to September in favor of releasing Mission Impossible 7 on its intended release date.
The delayed release, however, bodes well for the film. Now set to release on September 30, Bros is the only major studio release that weekend. The following week Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is scheduled for release.
From the name to the cast, to the storyline, we are exceptionally intrigued by this film. We were excited to learn that the entire principal cast will star exclusively LGBTQ actors, who will play both queer and straight characters on screen.
“I could not be more proud or excited about the historic nature of the all-openly LGBTQ+ cast of ‘Bros.’ After queer actors have spent decades watching straight actors capitalize both artistically and professionally by playing LGBTQ+ characters, it is a long overdue dream come true to be able to assemble this remarkable, hilarious cast,” Eichner told The Hollywood Reporter.
Starring Billy Eichner, who also co-wrote the film, and Luke McFarlane by his side as his love interest, we are excited to see what comes of this story.
We are huge Luke McFarlane fans in this house. He stole our very queer hearts as Scotty on Brothers & Sisters and we’re so excited to see him in the first major studio gay romance release. You may also have seen his beautiful face recently in the Netflix gay holiday film Single All The Way.
Not a whole lot is known about the plot, other than the notion that it’s definitely a gay romantic comedy. Two gay men who are terrible at relationships are afraid of commitment and too busy for love. Yada yada yada. Sounds pretty textbook for a rom-com major studio release.
Do we care about predictability? We do not. What we do care about is that they get the representation right. As the first major studio release, this could shape the way LGBTQ stories are told by these huge mega corporations moving forward. Considering the LGBTQ involvement of those making the film, we are exceptionally hopeful that the gays are finally about to get their day in the sun in Hollywood.
Filming has officially wrapped, and although September feels really far away, we can wait. Especially for something like this!
