Bella Ramsey announces she is gender-fluid
Right before the release of her much-awaited HBO show The Last of Us, Bella Ramsey told the New York Times that she identifies as gender-fluid. The young 19-year-old said that she has always felt open to all pronouns when speaking about herself.
“Someone would call me ‘she’ or ‘her’ and I wouldn’t think about it, but I knew that if someone called me ‘he’ it was a bit exciting,” said Ramsey.
“I’m very much just a person,” she said “Being gendered isn’t something that I particularly like, but in terms of pronouns, I really couldn’t care less.”
Although the actress hasn’t specifically labeled herself as nonbinary, she did say that when she is filling out forms, she does prefer to check that box when it comes to gender identity.
So maybe it is not a coincidence that Bella Ramsey is starring in the Last of Us. Her character, Ellie, is also queer and identifies as a lesbian. It has been documented that the director of the show went on record and said that Ellie’s character will appear as queer in the show, just as she does in the game. This seemed to satisfy hardcore Last of Us enthusiasts.
The show is based on an incredibly popular video game that follows Ellie, a 14-year-old who is navigating a post-apocalyptic world that is dealing with a fungus that has killed off the majority of the human population. Ellie and her companion are immune to the virus, but that doesn’t mean that their life is simple. It’s anything but simple.
Queer gamers flocked to this game because of Ellie’s character. The creators of the game have been applauded for the quality queer representation that exists in this world. When it was announced that the game was being developed into a show, the world held its collective breath to see if this aspect of the Last of Us would make it into the HBO production.
With confirmation that this was occurring, global applause occurred. Now, everyone waits with bated breath for the show’s premiere. Watch Bella Ramsey in The Last of Us on January 15 as it premieres on HBO Max in the United States.
