Bad Bunny makes out with man on stage at the VMAs

This is not a drill, folks! Despite the fact that Bad Bunny has previously mentioned that he is just a staunch ally of the LGBTQ community, and not actually a member of the family, the Puerto Rican singer definitely delivered a serve of hi gay at the 2022 VMAs last night.

And fam, we are here for this kind of allyship!

Just moments after making history as the first ever non-English speaking artist to win the category of Artist of the Year, Bad Bunny took stage at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx to perform for thousands of fans. The performance was broadcast to all at, and tuning into, the VMAs.

In the middle of his performance, Bad Bunny shocked everyone when he unexpectedly turned and participated in a passionate lip lock with a back up dancer of the same sex. To be clear, the rapper also made out with a dancer of the opposite sex before he sent the gays absolutely bananas! There may *coughs* also have been some interestingly themed costumes that paid homage to the *coughs* bisexuals of the world.

Despite the fact that he has said he identifies as straight previously, the artist has also said he adopts a “never say never” kind of attitude about these things. Now we’re not speculating about what this could mean (until he speaks on the issue, we will not), however, Bad Bunny has always been an advocate for the queer community.

Some of the ways the star has demonstrated solid allyship and contributed to the elevation of queerness was during his release of the “Caro” music video. Here he highlights smashing gender norms and expressing one’s own fluidity, while also expressing a bisexual narrative (something that definitely seemed present on his stage at Yankee Stadium yesterday).

His contributions don’t end there. In his music video, “Yo Perreo Sola”, the rapper transforms into a woman in drag and mentions lyrics such as “the boys and girls want to be with her.” When speaking about the video, he said he said he became a drag queen to “show support to those who need it. I may not be gay, but I’m a human who cares”. Clearly the artist is using his platform to smash homophobia and transphobia in reggaeton and popular music.

Artist of the Year

Standing up for queer injustice is not a new venture for Bad Bunny. In 2019, he clapped back at fellow reggaetonero Don Omar and accused him of saying homophobic remarks against Ozuka and calling him “embarrassing.” Then, in 2020 he brought back to attention Alexa Negrón Luciano, who was a victim of a hate crime where she lost her life in Puerto Rico. Cases like Alexa’s often go unsolved and are simply forgotten. During his performance on Jimmy Fallon, he wore a shirt that said, “They killed Alexa, not a man in a skirt.”

If you follow Bad Bunny’s career, you’ll know that his concerts are huge parties that include many star-studded musical guests! And of course, in keeping with his efforts to advance the queer agenda, he has invited LGBTQ+ artists to the stage throughout his performance career. This includes Villano Antillano, the first trans woman to ever appear on Spotify’s Top 50 Global List. Her appearance during the opening show of his new tour “El Último Tour del Mundo” in Puerto Rico was highly celebrated, as was his inclusion of openly lesbian rapper Young Miko.

The queer community needs more positive visbility right now, and if our allies want to go around locking lips with other folks of the same sex to advance the queer agenda, we gotta say, we aint complaining.

Bad Bunny, we thank you for your service!
