And Just Like That… Again

On March 22, 2022, it was announced that the controversial Sex and the City reboot And Just Like That was renewed for a second season. The first season was marked with all kinds of mixed feelings from viewers and the Internet exploded every Thursday with debate as each episode dropped.

As Sex and the City was criticized in the past for being too white and not dealing well with any kind of minority representation at all, And Just Like That made it their business to address these issues head-on.

It tried to tackle, and mirror, the social issues reflected in real-life society in New York City at the moment, but this attempt was met with much criticism. Folks said And Just Like That tried way too hard to be “woke”, to the point where it felt like the show was even making fun of the social issues at times.

Whether you loved it, or you hated it, And Just Like That was a wild ride. Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) left Steve (David Eigenberg) for a non-binary character, Che Diaz (Sara Ramirez), but not before making it super clear to the entire world that she was supporting her underage kid and his girlfriend uses their home as a sex pad. Big (Chris Noth) died while riding a Peloton bike. Samantha (Kim Catrall) moved to London and was no longer speaking to any of the gang. And Standord (Willie Garson) left Anthony (Mario Cantone)… just like that. Charlotte’s kid announced that they were gender fluid and changed their name at school

Viewers criticized the depiction of gender fluidity and the character of Che was certainly raked over the coals online. Anthony’s promiscuity, and suggested continued promiscuity even while Stanford was still around, caught people’s attention too. Sex and the City was criticized for its treatment of the LGBTQ community in its storylines when it was on-air, and it seems this treatment has extended to the reboot as well.

However, despite the conjecture, there are definitely people who are satisfied with the project. After the announcement, HBO Max Head of Original Content Sarah Aubrey stated, “We have been delighted by the cultural conversation generated by these characters and their stories, set in a world we already know and love so much.

“We are proud of the work Michael Patrick King and our wonderful writers, producers, cast and crew have done to bring these stories to the screen. We can’t wait for fans to see what’s in store for season two.”

Michael Patrick King told the Hollywood Reporter,  “I want to know more about all the new characters. I want lots more.”

With And Just Like That getting a second season, it looks like he will get to do just that. Stay tuned for more information about season two as it is announced.
