Heartstopper cleans house at the Emmys: 9 nominations and 5 wins

Last night at the 2022 Children’s and Family Emmys, Netflix’s Heartstopper had quite a groundbreaking evening. The show came to the event with nine nominations and left with five wins. It was impossible for the show to pick up all nine awards, as several cast members were nominated in the same categories.

Kit Connor (Nick Nelson) picked up the award for Outstanding Lead Performance, Olivia Colman (Sarah Nelson) took home the win for Outstanding Guest Performance, Alice Oseman won for Outstanding Writing, and Daniel Edwards won for Outstanding Casting.

Joe Locke, who plays Charlie Spring and is Kit Connor’s co-lead on the show was nominated in the same category as Connor for the same award. Similarly, Will Gao (Tao Xu) and Yasmin Finney (Elle Argent), who both play Charlie’s besties, were both nominated for Outstanding Supporting Performance. The show also picked up the win for Outstanding Young Teen Series.

Unfortunately, not all the nominated members of the cast and crew could make it to the 1st ever Children’s and Family Emmys in Los Angeles. Patrick Walters, Heartstopper’s Executive Producer accepted Alice Oseman’s award on their behalf, while Will Gao and Sebastian Croft (Ben Hope) accepted for Kit Connor.

Heartstopper, based on the graphic novels by Alice Oseman, was released in April earlier this year. No one expected Netflix’s little queer show to garner such widespread attention as rapidly as it did. The gays were watching, the kids were watching, moms and dads, and the family dog all tuned in. It was promptly renewed by Netflix for both a second and a third season – a rare move for the streaming giant in such unstable times.

The show wrapped filming of the second season just a handful of days ago, and fans all around the globe now begin the wait as Heartstopper moves into post-production. Netflix has not released any word yet as to a possible release date for the episodes.

This was the first time that the Emmys was split like this with the Children’s and Family category getting their own day. Until this year, it had simply been included in the Daytime Emmys. The category experienced a 23% increase in nominations in just the past two years, so the academy deemed the split necessary to spotlight all those deserving.

Congratulations to the Heartstopper family!
